The deadline for this year's Missouri gas tax refund was September 30, and it has passed. There are no late claims. If you didn't file by that date, the refund on fuel you bought from July 2025 through June 2026 is gone. If this is the first you're hearing of it, you're not alone: Missouri got a record 17,119 claims last year, out of millions of drivers. Plenty of people never knew the refund existed, and others knew but decided the paperwork wasn't worth it.

Why there's no second chance

Missouri has one filing window a year. This year's ran July 1 to September 30. Once it closes, the Department of Revenue doesn't take claims, whether or not you kept your receipts.

Next year's claim is already running

The purchase period for the next claim started July 1, 2026. Every Missouri fill-up since then counts toward the claim you'll file next summer, so you're already building it. The only question is whether you're keeping the receipts.

Key dates for the 2027 claim

Fuel counts from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. You can file from July 1 to September 30, 2027.

What to keep

The claim asks for the seller and the gallons from each purchase, so a receipt only helps if you can read it. Gas station receipts can fade, smudge and become unreadable, often within months. For every fill-up, keep the date, the station name and address, the number of gallons and the total paid.

Take a photo instead of leaving the paper in the glove box. The Form 4923-H guide shows exactly where each of those details ends up on the form.

Make it a habit

Photograph the receipt at the pump before you drive off. It takes about ten seconds, and by next September you have a full year of fill-ups ready to go, so the form takes minutes instead of an evening.

What's it worth?

The average refund in 2025 was $162.74, according to Department of Revenue figures reported by ABC17 and KRCG. That's real money for an evening's work, and a lot less than an evening if your receipts are already sorted. Yours depends on how many gallons you document, and the calculator gives you an estimate in seconds.
